Hydraulic Dock Levellers

A hydraulic dock leveller is a hydraulic bridge that compensates for the height difference between a warehouse or factory loading platform and a truck bed, enabling safe forklift loading and unloading. It is made to measure with a hinged or telescopic lip in 6, 8 and 10 tonne capacities for warehouses and logistics centres.

What are Hydraulic Dock Levellers?

Dock levellers turn the height difference between the loading platform and the truck bed into a safe bridge at the most critical point of any logistics operation. Hydraulic cylinders raise the platform, the lip rests on the truck bed, and forklifts move loads without interruption.

Capacity is selected according to the combined weight of the forklift and load and the intensity of use. Common options are 6, 8 and 10 tonnes. A telescopic lip is recommended when the truck bed is further away or for container loading, and a vertical or mobile leveller for existing buildings where a pit cannot be built.

Dock levellers usually work together with an industrial sectional door and a dock shelter. This combination reduces energy loss, keeps rain and dust out and protects the cold chain.

Where are Hydraulic Dock Levellers used?

Hydraulic Dock Levellers are used in 6 different applications, including logistics centres, factory dispatch, cold storage warehouses, e-commerce fulfilment, FMCG distribution, heavy industry. On every project, opening size, frequency of use and security requirements are assessed on site during the survey; the system is then made to measure and installed by our own crews.

Logistics centres
High-tempo loading on multi-door dispatch lines.
Factory dispatch
Uninterrupted forklift flow from production to vehicle.
Cold storage warehouses
Cold chain protection through dock shelter integration.
E-commerce fulfilment
Fast dock operations under heavy parcel traffic.
FMCG distribution
Fast, safe loading with frequent vehicle changeovers.
Heavy industry
Heavy loads and pallet handling with 10 tonne capacity.

How to choose the right hydraulic dock levellers

A poorly chosen system means early failures, high energy costs or security gaps. Choosing the right hydraulic dock levellers depends on opening size, daily frequency of use, security and insulation requirements, motor and automation type, and budget. Consider the points below when deciding; we finalise them together during the site survey.

  1. 1

    Forklift + load weight

Capacity is chosen according to the heaviest forklift and load combination.

  2. 2

    Vehicle types

A telescopic lip is recommended for vehicles of varying heights and containers.

  3. 3

    Building condition

If a pit cannot be built, a vertical or mobile leveller is preferred.

  4. 4

    Temperature control

In cold chain and food facilities, a dock shelter becomes essential.

How we work: from site survey to service

The process has four steps: free site survey, design and quotation, manufacturing and installation, and service. We send a price quote within 1 hour on average after your survey request. The approved system is made to measure at our facility in Tuzla, Istanbul, installed and commissioned by our own crews, and supported by scheduled maintenance and a 24/7 breakdown line.

  1. Site survey

Measurements are taken on site; usage intensity, electrical infrastructure and floor conditions are recorded.

  2. Design and quotation

Series, motor and accessories are selected; the quote is itemised and includes installation.

  3. Manufacturing and installation

Made to measure at our Tuzla facility and installed by our own installation crews.

  4. Service

Hydraulic Dock Levellers: frequently asked questions

If your question is not answered here, ask us by phone or on WhatsApp.

What is a dock leveller?

A dock leveller (loading ramp) is a hydraulic system that compensates for the height difference between a warehouse or factory loading platform and a truck bed, enabling safe forklift loading and unloading. It is available in hinged lip, telescopic lip and vertical types, and is usually installed together with a sectional door and dock shelter. The right leveller is chosen according to truck bed height, forklift load and the number of daily loadings.

Which type of dock leveller should I choose?

A hinged lip leveller suits standard loading pits, a telescopic lip suits distant truck beds and containers, and a vertical leveller suits areas where a pit cannot be built. A dock shelter is added for thermal and weather protection. Load capacity is usually selected in the 6–8 tonne range, and the decision is made during the site survey by measuring platform height and vehicle types.

What is the standard load capacity of a dock leveller?

Common dock leveller capacities are 6, 8 and 10 tonnes. The correct capacity is determined by the combined weight of the forklift and the load it carries; 8–10 tonnes is preferred for intensive logistics operations. Dynamic load, the number of daily loadings and differences in truck bed height are also taken into account.

When is a dock shelter needed?

A dock shelter is recommended alongside a dock leveller when you want to reduce heat loss, limit rain and dust ingress and protect the cold chain. It closes the gap between the truck body and the building to create a sealed transfer. It is critical for energy savings and hygiene in cold storage warehouses and food and pharmaceutical facilities.

How long does dock leveller installation take?

Dock leveller installation time depends on pit preparation, leveller type and site conditions. Once the concrete pit is ready, installation and commissioning are completed quickly. Pack Door teams plan the work with minimal disruption to dispatch; for multi-dock projects, a clear installation schedule is shared after the site survey, coordinated with the sectional doors and dock shelters.
