Fire-Rated Roller Shutter Systems

A fire-rated roller shutter (fire shutter) is a steel rolling shutter that closes automatically in a fire to separate two compartments and delay the spread of flames, hot gases and smoke. It is classified EI60–EI240 to EN 13501-2 and connected to the building’s fire alarm system.

What are Fire-Rated Roller Shutter?

Fire-rated roller shutters are the most practical way to create a fire compartment across large openings. The shutter stays open in normal use and closes automatically when triggered by a fire panel signal, a smoke detector or a heat-sensitive fusible link, delaying the passage of flames, hot gases and smoke into the adjacent space for 60 to 240 minutes depending on its class.

Power failures are common in fire scenarios, so our systems are designed on the fail-safe principle: when power is lost, the shutter closes by gravity at a controlled speed. Reset and test equipment makes periodic fire scenario drills simple to carry out.

The right shutter is specified during the site survey based on the opening size, wall type (rigid or flexible), the required EI class and the need for fire panel integration. We install fire shutters in chemical, paint, retail, car park, hospital and logistics facilities.

Where are Fire-Rated Roller Shutter used?

Fire-Rated Roller Shutter are used in 6 different applications, including chemical plants, paint and solvent areas, shopping malls and retail, car parks, hospitals and hotels, logistics and hangars. On every project, opening size, frequency of use and security requirements are assessed on site during the survey; the system is then made to measure and installed by our own crews.

Chemical plants
EI240 barrier for high fire loads.
Paint and solvent areas
Compartmentation of flammable material cells.
Shopping malls and retail
EI60 separation at shop and corridor openings.
Car parks
Fire separation between levels and zones.
Hospitals and hotels
Evacuation safety in corridors and atriums.
Logistics and hangars
Compartmentation of wide-span warehouse sections.

How to choose the right fire-rated roller shutter

A poorly chosen system means early failures, high energy costs or security gaps. Choosing the right fire-rated roller shutter depends on opening size, daily frequency of use, security and insulation requirements, motor and automation type, and budget. Consider the points below when deciding; we finalise them together during the site survey.

  1. 1

    Fire load

EI60 is typical for medium risk; EI240 is preferred for chemicals and solvents.

  2. 2

    Opening size

Openings wider than 2500 mm require a motor cover and reinforced guide rails.

  3. 3

    Wall type

Fixing details differ for rigid (concrete/brick) and flexible (plasterboard) walls.

  4. 4

    Daily use

Choose the motorised series if the shutter will open and close every day.

How we work: from site survey to service

The process has four steps: free site survey, design and quotation, manufacturing and installation, and service. We send a price quote within 1 hour on average after your survey request. The approved system is made to measure at our facility in Tuzla, Istanbul, installed and commissioned by our own crews, and supported by scheduled maintenance and a 24/7 breakdown line.

  1. Site survey

Measurements are taken on site; usage intensity, electrical infrastructure and floor conditions are recorded.

  2. Design and quotation

Series, motor and accessories are selected; the quote is itemised and includes installation.

  3. Manufacturing and installation

Made to measure at our Tuzla facility and installed by our own installation crews.

  4. Service

Fire-Rated Roller Shutter: frequently asked questions

If your question is not answered here, ask us by phone or on WhatsApp.

What is a fire-rated roller shutter?

A fire-rated roller shutter (fire shutter) is a steel rolling system that closes automatically in a fire to separate two spaces. It delays the spread of flames and smoke, buying time for evacuation and firefighting. It is connected to the fire alarm system and also closes under controlled gravity when power fails. Fire shutters are produced in EI60–EI240 classes with EN 1634-1 test reports and used in shopping malls, car parks and industrial facilities.

What is the difference between EI60 and EI240?

The EI class expresses integrity (E) and insulation (I) in minutes according to EN 13501-2. EI60 means 60 minutes of fire resistance, while EI240 means 240 minutes, or 4 hours. The required class is determined by the building type, the fire compartment and the calculation under the applicable fire protection regulation. The project designer or fire authority report confirms this value.

How does a motorised fire shutter work?

A motorised fire shutter closes automatically via its motor or gravity system when it receives a signal from the fire detection panel. A fusible link triggers mechanical closing at 73 °C. If the power fails, fail-safe gravity closing takes over, so the compartment is protected in all conditions and the spread of smoke and flames to other areas is delayed.

Is a fire shutter the same as a fire door?

No, they are different products. A fire shutter is a rolling system that closes wide openings such as warehouse and factory passages. Stair landings, escape lobbies and room compartments require self-closing hinged fire doors instead. The right product is determined by the opening size, whether it lies on an escape route and the project’s fire safety report.

How often should a fire shutter be serviced?

A fire shutter should receive periodic maintenance and a fire scenario test at least once a year. The service checks the guide rails, seals, fusible link, motor-to-panel connections and the gravity closing speed. In heavily used facilities, inspections every six months with findings recorded in the maintenance log make regulatory audits easier.
